TALKS: JAZZ PIANO / COMMUNITY JAZZ, UKES & JAM , Saturday 8th August
LINEUP: Richard Michael – piano / Rachel & Ian Cooper – Ukuleles / Jazz Jam
Richard Michael has influenced a generation of teachers and students with his innovative methods of teaching improvisation through thirty years work with the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra (FYJO) and a career as composer, performer and workshop leader. A documentary programme for BBC2’s Young Musician of the Year in 1996 brought his teaching methods to a wider audience. His most recent achievements after leaving full time teaching are to concentrate on freelance activities! and his award as the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group ‘Jazz Educator’. Here he provides one of his unique introductions to jazz piano especially for Brecon Jazz 2020
Ian Cooper is a locally based jazz bassist and music teacher. He and Rachel have led a regular ukulele group in Brecon called ’Uskulele Jazz’ for a number of years. This is now so popular that a complete orchestra has emerged, and Ian & Rachel discuss using ‘jazz standards’ to discover and explore music-making in a community atmosphere. We hope to follow these sessions with a contribution from Brecon’s locally Jazz Jammers.
