Thinking about Brecon Jazz Festival this year
We know that many of you will be thinking and wondering about Brecon Jazz Festival this year, and whether it will be running in 2021, and if so, when.
You will know too that we have not cancelled. We did not cancel in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are not planning for a cancellation this year either.
Last year, in March 2020, we already had our programme ready when the virus and lockdown hit. So we formed two amazing partnerships – with Ratio a Welsh production company on our doorstep, and Vialma an Anglo-French music streaming platform with a subscription base.
‘Virtually Brecon Jazz’ was our offer for 2020, and it was totally online, with more than 40 events. We had a very successful year, with more viewers/listeners, and generous audience donations so that everyone got paid. Thank you everyone.
We realise that online is not for everyone and that many of you have enjoyed the recorded concerts but missed the live experience of jazz. This year, we find ourselves in a different situation, with such a haitus regarding artists performing and venues closed. However, with Welsh Government and local Town Council support*, we were able to test and trial music events in a safe ‘studio’ environment at the Muse in Brecon, and to get that music out to people by livestream on the night and then via Vialma as recordings and catchup.
So thinking of 2021, we must plan for ‘hybrid’. That is, where any event is possible, it will be in a venue with a small, live audience, that can be made into a ‘studio’ if lockdown occurs, and where audiences realise that they may have to opt late for online. The music will be live – and if you can’t be there, you can join us on ‘catchup’.We are also planning to ‘unpack’ the Festival Weekend.
Normally, you come and stay and enjoy the pick of an intensive 3 day feast of great jazz, atmosphere, moving between indoor concerts and outdoor food, wider music sounds and socialising. This year, we are going to relax that weekend into a longer spread, to space out, allow the light and air to get in between the events. Again, we will be working with our partners, and everything not experienced live can be viewed on catchup. It will be our most accessible festival so far. Bear with us while we work with musicians, venues, our volunteer and freelance team and designers, partners and funders, to get this into a workable programme.
If you have a booking to visit and stay in Brecon, don’t cancel it yet. Everyone needs a break, and this is a holiday area of course! And the chances are that when you come there may well be some great jazz on somewhere nearby.
