The Monmouth Big Band is one of the most highly regarded 19-piece jazz orchestra around, formed largely from South Wales based musicians. The band perform an exciting wide variety of the big band numbers, drawn from the classic swing repertoire of Count Basle, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington, through to contemporary numbers by the likes of Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones, Charles Mingus and musical director Gareth Roberts.
Gareth not only leads the orchestra, but is well known and renowned jazz trombonist. Gareth also leads his own quintet, and is a member of the famous Cardiff-based Capital City Jazz Orchestra. Gareth is also a talented composer having written several specially commissioned works for the band including the Monmouthshire Suite – a significant new big band work premiered at The Savoy Theatre in Monmouth in 2019.
