WHAT THEY SAY: “PQ…an imaginative and surprising mix of standard jazz styles, Czech folklore and original improvisation presented with humour and youthful energy…
“Zlámal himself plays tenor saxophone with the fluency of a professional within the mould created by the great messengers of jazz such as Wayne Shorter and Jean Toussaint, richly toned and tightly phrased”.
“Altogether a unique band which represents both tradition and the cutting edge of Central European imaginations should not be missed” (RP).
Expect a mix of youthful vigour, virtuosic instrumental skills and infectious fun from PQ, the Czech band led by saxophonist and clarinettist Pavel Zlámal. Former students from the jazz faculty of the prestigious Janáček Academy in Brno, the vibrantly cultural second city of Czech Republic, PQ plays original compositions as well as newly invented versions of standard tunes and references to the beauty of Moravian folklore. The style of playing is rooted in the modern jazz tradition whilst the interpretations draw upon a wider context resulting in a heady mix of familiarity and surprise which will keep you on your toes and keep your toes tapping! Ok…maybe your body twitching as well…!
The launch of their latest album, with the quizzical title “Inevitable Rods” had the Brno audience in stitches when they were not listening open mouthed to the virtuosic display of pianist Martin Konvička, Slovak bassist Juraj Valenčik and Basel based drummer Václav Pálka. The music ranges from the almost inaudible, with judicious use of silence, via a bluesy and gospel tunefulness, through to cascades of rhythm and sound within an impressively coordinated ensemble.
Pavel Zlámal is a virtuoso classical clarinetist and saxophonist. He studied and focused his attention on contemporary and experimental music with a strong focus on free improvisation. As a versatile player and improviser, he has earned his multi-genre experience, performing with musical groups in the field of serious, popular, jazz and experimental music. Also a significant leading musician of the Czech non-conformist, jazz and avant-garde musical scene.
