This is special performance and personal message for all our Brecon Jazz supporters and audience. Regina Carter and Alvester Garnett recorded for us one of their unique lockdown ‘Alone Together Duets’ from New York State. We hear about their visits to Brecon, and how Regina first played Brecon Jazz in 2000 as part of an exhausting four months World & European tour. This began in August at the Marciac Jazz Festival in France and was followed by ‘Sunday at the Brecon Jazz Festival’.

As a Jazz violinist Regina is one of today’s most original and daring musicians. Classically trained, she grew up in Detroit, where she absorbed all the music that Motown had to offer. While in high school, Regina became inspired when she discovered jazz violinists such as Noel Pointer, Ray Nance and Eddie South. In 2018, Carter was named Artistic Director of the New Jersey Performing Arts All-Female Jazz Camp. Regina Carter is a master of improvisational jazz violin. Though her work draws upon a wide range of musical influences – including Motown, Afro-Cuban, Swing, Bebop, Folk, and World – she has crafted a signature voice and style. Carter’s performances highlight the often overlooked potential of the jazz violin for its lyric, melodic, and percussive potential.

Her early training as a classical musician is reflected in the fluidity, grace, and balance of her performance. Carter’s repertoire retains a firm connection with the familiar while venturing in new, unexpected directions.

“A talented, charismatic player who is almost single-handedly reviving interest in the violin as a jazz instrument”.- The Los Angeles Times

‘Go to’ genius session drummer and Reginas’s partner Alvester Garnett joined Regina Carter’s band in 1998. Purely professional at first, they married in 2004. Al says of working together during the Covid-19 lockdown, that they are only just beginning to scratch the surface of their musical creativity together.
