SAMANTHA WRIGHT QUINTET Fri 9th Aug 2.15pm-3.30pm at THE MUSE (advance £10, standard £12)
LINEUP: Samantha Wright clarinet / Alicia Gardener-Trejo bass clarinet & baritone sax / Sophia Oster piano / Tilman Oberbeck double bass / Phelan Burgoyne drums
A concert supported by the UK Jazz Promotion Network’s “Emerging Talent” scheme.
Clarinettist Samantha Wright leads this Hamburg-based Anglo German collaboration. With her outstanding and distinctive ‘Double Clarinet Quintet’, Samantha was chosen by the Jazz Promotion Network (JPN) UK for support to make her debut UK tour last year.
Samantha completed the Birmingham Conservatoire’s jazz programme and is now studying and teaching at the Hamburg Academy for Music and Culture. She also specialises in jazz clarinet performance and research at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. During her time in Hamburg, Samantha has become a regular performer in and around the city with her quartet. The musicians says that her work explores the historic timeline of the clarinet in jazz through first-hand transcriptions and analysis. This has given her playing a real depth in musical maturity, with a rich understanding of her instrument, from the roots of jazz to the contemporary. Originally from Oldham, Samantha Wright is one of the ‘new generation’ of young jazz musicians and band leaders emerging onto the European jazz scene.
What they say:
“Who to look out for in 2019 – Samantha Wright” Jazzwise 2018.
“A name to watch”- Jazzwise 2017
The lineup is supported by Baritone saxophonist/composer Alicia Gardener-Trejo a highly creative sidewoman. She performs regularly with Samantha Wright’s Double Clarinet Quintet. The lineup is completed by high talented and established performers (pictured below) on the Hamburg and UK jazz scene, comprising Sophia Oster piano, Tilman Oberbeck double bass and Phelan Burgoyne drums.
