“JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP” Saturday MORNING 14th Aug 10.00am-12.30pm at the CASTLE HOTEL
LEADER: Alison Rayner
IN-PERSON at the CASTLE HOTEL BRECON : Click for TICKETS from £10 per booking.
The workshop is for instrumentalists and is open to all kind of instruments. Participants should have a reasonable facility in playing their instrument and an interest and enthusiasm for jazz. Previous experience of improvisation is not necessary and beginner improvisers are welcome as the workshop aims to build confidence. Ability to read notation is helpful but not essential.
In this session, using material drawn from standard jazz repertoire, we will work on ensemble playing and developing ideas for soloing, using tools such as call and response and simple melodic ideas to build rhythmic phrasing. Including some analysis and listening, this will be a morning of playing music with others, learning new ideas and having fun!
This is a three hour session with a short break for refreshments. Covid safety will be a priority and the venue is a large, spacious room with patio windows which can be fully opened onto the adjacent garden. Participants are invited to wear masks if appropriate to their instrument, and if they are more comfortable in doing so – and we will all be taking note of the guidelines or rules that are applicable on the day
Alison Rayner is one of the most experienced and versatile jazz bassists on the London & UK jazz scene. She is a prolific composer and bandleader, creating innovative projects and promoting melodic jazz arrangements, as well as highly in-demand by top touring and UK jazz lineups. Incredibly in this busy life, she devotes huge energy and commitment to teaching, and to helping to develop the early jazz interests of informal learners, jazz students and instrumentalists, as well as working with more experienced players to develop their soloing and jazz improvisation techniques.
She has performed at Brecon Jazz Club and the Festival on many occasions, and on 13th August (Friday), will join a Trio with Deirdre Cartwright (guitar) and Mark O’Connor (drums ) for a wonderful evening of classic melodic jazz at the Castle, 8.30pm
